Car accident rates in Philadelphia higher than in many other cities

If you’re hoping to reduce your risk of ever getting into a car wreck, you might want to avoid driving in Philadelphia.

According to a recent study, Philadelphia drivers face a relatively high car accident risk compared to other U.S. cities. Philadelphia drivers get into an average of one accident every 6.1 years. You’d be better off driving in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, where an individual driver averages one accident every 13.8 years, according to the 2012 Allstate America’s Best Drivers Report. On average, the nation’s drivers are involved in one accident every 10 years.

Philadelphia car accident lawyers know that drivers can never have a zero risk of an accident – even in the safest city. But drivers can take steps to make the roads safer for everyone. The Best Drivers Report is a reminder about the importance of avoiding distractions like texting while driving and also staying sober behind the wheel to avoid drunk driving accidents. At Flager & Associates, we agree with the recommendations in the report: Drivers in big cities should allow plenty of time to get to their destination. Find out in advance if any events will impact traffic.  Stay alert and get directions ahead of time.

Allstate ranks Philadelphia 190 out of the 200 largest cities mentioned in the safe driving report. The report reveals that Philadelphia drivers are 64.1 percent more likely to be involved in an accident than the rest of the nation.

Deadly car accidents happen every day throughout the United States. More than 32,000 fatal car accidents are reported every year. It’s an alarming number, but the National Highway Transportation Administration says car crash fatalities are at the lowest level they’ve been since 1949. Drivers should review the following safety tips:

· Obey the speed limit

· Keep an eye out for pedestrians, especially children

· Know the rules of the road

· Keep a safe distance between your car and other vehicles
